What would cause the background of a Internet pages to turn grey?

One day the background was white, but the next it was grey and has been so since (for over a year). I'll go on other sites and the grey gets all screwy with their background color that their page will end up these blocks of white (or whatever the background color may be) while the rest of the page is the stupid grey.
