What is the best laptop for under $500.?

I am looking to get my elderly Mother a laptop to replace the old second hand one I gave her nearly 2 years ago that finally croaked. I set her up with wifi and Netflix and she has an ipod to add songs to via CD's she already has. So a CD player that can rip CD is necessary.
